Exploring a Galaxy Far, Far Away With My Son
After waiting seven long years, Sam and I finally watched his first Star Wars movie — Episode IV A New Hope. He was totally mesmerized, so it was awesome. Now I can’t decide when to move on to the next one. Posted via email from Snipic | Comment »

Happy Holidays From a Warm Place
I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas and the holidays, so I wasn’t sure how the trip to Florida would go. I have to say, it’s been lovely to be in a place with warm breezes, lovely beaches and outdoor dining for Christmas. The kids are having a blast. Palm trees look great with Christmas lights. Perhaps new traditions are needed. See the full gallery on...

The Day Before Thanksgiving Used to Be Different
OK, I know I’m getting old and of course everything was different when I was younger. But I feel like the day beofre Thanksgiving used to be more “normal.” My parents both used to work, though i think my mom always had a half-day. School was a full day. Now it seems like everyone takes this week off, or at least today and spends the day running errands. Of course, Black...
An Icy Fog Breathes Magic Onto the Neighborhood
Icy fog is my favorite weather event here in the Pacific Northwest. We had a really good one last night and I managed to get out of bed early enough to enjoy it. Ice crystals covered everything, but they were especially lovely on leaves and bushes. See the full gallery on Posterous Posted via email from Snipic | Comment »

We’ll be nomads for a couple months as the revamp gets done.I’ll miss being adjacent to Eddie and Matt but looking forward to the new space. As usual, things got a little silly in the final hours. Dear Weather Goddess of the Pacific NorthWest
Thank you for today. Thank you for yesterday. Thanks for the last week of lovely, warm, sunny weather. We took full advantage. Breakfast outside. Dinners on the deck. Swims in the lake. Drinks on the patio. It will make November 1-9, 10-21, 23-30; December 2-14, 16-26, etc… that much more tolerable. Posted via email from Burbal | Comment »

Photo: The calm after the storm.
This shot is taken almost exactly 48 hours from my previous shot in the same place. Other than some very large puddles, a few downed limbs and electrical wires, there isn’t much damage in and around Barnegat, N.J. It is interesting because this is only 15 miles from where Irene hit land for the second time on the East Coast of the U.S. So, the center of the storm isn’t the place...

America, Let's Not Forget That We Got Ourselves...
As much as I’m griping about the inability of Congress and the White House to reach an agreement on raising the debt ceiling and restructure spending to avoid an econapocolypse, we — as in the people of America — put ourselves in the place. First, we voted for these people, many of them have been in Washington for decades. We voted for George W. Bush — twice — and...
Assembling a Collection of Assembly
I had to do some house projects today and was in need of an allen wrench. Almost everytime I have purchased a piece of furniture that needed assembly I have kept the little wrenches that come with them. So after 20+ years of putting together chairs, bars, tables, bookcases, beds, cribs, changing tables, dressers, etc. from Ikea, Pettery Barn, Crate and Barrel, etc., I’ve assembled quite a...

Is Fox News Art?
Art is often created to expose, illuminate or mock established norms, or “the establishment.” Artists, whether painters, songwriters, singers or what have you, are often called outsiders — as in outside of the establishment. If Fox News is constantly working to expose, illuminate or mock the “mainstream” (established) media, does that make Fox News and those who...

Cultural Content Support Evolves More Slowly Than...
Two things happened in the last few days that illustrated the disconnect between supply and demand when it comes to cultural content. First, the local the Bellevue Philharmonic is shutting down after 43 years. Sad, perhaps. But is the demand for live symphony performances these days? Second, “Frontline” executive producer David Fanning called for the creation of a Public...

Objective Journalism Was Always a Myth. Can We...
The latest flap about compromised journalism principles that has (hopefully) culminated in Michal Arrington’s latest mini-screed on TechCrunch is is yet another in a series of facile arguments about the purity of reporting in the traditional and new media. First, objective journalism is a concept that has been around for a very short time, and really was an ideal that I don’t think...
